More Information: The Mool Mantra is the most important (and first) composition contained within the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS), the holy scripture of the Sikhs. The Guru Granth Sahib, totalling 1430 pages, is said to be a detailed amplification of the Mool Mantra. The Mool Mantra encompasses the entire universally complex theology of the Sikh faith. It was composed by Guru Nanak Dev, upon his enlightenment. A comprehensive article about this mantra can be found here.

The word Mool means 'main', 'root' or 'chief' and Mantar means 'magic chant' or 'magic portion'.  Together the words Mool Mantar mean the 'Main chant' or 'root verse'.

Recommended Version:  Mul Mantra by Snatam Kaur (with lyrics and transliteration)

Musical Notes: This musical composition is 7m55s long, and 258 bars long, in 4/4 time. The mantra itself is only 17 bars long. There are 12 bars of lead-in before the vocals begin. The first verse (key of C) has the following guitar chords: Am, Em, G, D, Am, Am, Am, Em, G, D, Am, Am, Am, Em, G, D, Am.

Note to Students: The steps to mastering a mantra: learn to (1) say the words - get your mouth used to producing the words (2) hum the melody - learn the musicality of the composition (3) sing the mantra - put it all together. Then transition to chanting without music/melody: (4) talk on pitch while saying the words of the mantra.
